Sign language can be a great way for students to learn more easily while having fun. A great song to sing and sign with your students is “Who Stole the Cookies.” All of the students will be able to interact with each other while learning new signs and vocabulary words.
The following are the lyrics to the song. You can substitute different names of your students each time the verse repeats. The student you call on can individually say and sign the “Who me?” and “Couldn’t be” lines, while the rest of the class responds. I suggest signing the words in italics.
Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?
Ava stole the cookies from the cookie jar
Who me?
Yes, you
Couldn’t be(sign not me)
Then who?
The following are the signs for each of the words:
Stole/Take – Open and close your hand as you pull it towards you as if you are grabbing something
Cookies – Make a claw shape with one hand and place it down on your opposite palm as if using a cookie cutter
Who – Place thumb on chin and put pointer finger up and wiggle it up and down
Me – Point to self
Yes – Move fist up and down as if nodding
You – Point at the student you are saying at the time
Couldn’t be – Use the sign for “Not me” – Flick thumb out from chin for not and then point to yourself for me.
Your students will have a lot of fun singing this song, and signing along will help them learn and remember words more easily.
