Snowmen At Night with Sign Language

video

Since we’re right in the middle of the cold winter season, I want to suggest a great story to read during this time of year. In Snowmen at Night by Carolyn Buehner a young boy builds a snowman and readers can follow his imagination of what he thinks snowmen do at night. This could be a great story to read to your students, or just a fun bedtime story for parents to read to their children.

For this particular story, I suggest signing only one word: snowman/snowmen. To do so, first make the sign for snow, which is to wiggle your fingers down in front of you as if the snow is falling down. Follow this by the sign for man, which is to touch your thumb to your forehead and then chest, keeping your hand open.

The word snowman (or snowmen) repeats often throughout the book, so I’d suggest children sign only this one word. This will make it more fun for them and keep them involved in the story. Rather than just being a passive listener as you read, they are given a job to do. They must pay close attention so they can hear the word and remember to sign it, making them an active participant. Children will have a lot of fun thinking about snowmen doing human activities such as having races and playing baseball. By teaching them signs, they will feel much more engaged in the fun story.
